"Always rejoice. Pray without ceasing. In all things give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you all."
      - 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

"Prayer is an aspiration of the heart, it is a simple glance directed to heaven, it is a cry of gratitude and love in the midst of trial as well as joy; finally, it is something great, supernatural, which expands my soul and unites me to Jesus."
      - St. Therese of Liseux

Prayer is one of the most important aspects of faith. Without prayer, we are unable to intimately know the person of God, and to grow in the depth of the interior life. More than simply talking to God, prayer helps us to orient our thoughts, words, and actions on the Almighty and eternity. See the sections below for guidance in different types of prayer.

Prayers for Life and Various Situations:
This section maintains many prayers that can be prayed on a daily basis for any situation in life, and can help faithful grow in virtue.
      • Act of Faith
      • Act of Hope
      • Act of Charity
      • Prayer Before Work- Come, Holy Spirit
      • Prayer After Work- We Fly to Thy Patronage
      • Five Finger Prayer
      • Golden Arrow
      • Jesus, the Very Thought of Thee
      • Miracle Prayer

      The Rosary:
“Among all the devotions approved by the Church none has been favored by so many miracles as the devotion of the most Holy Rosary. ”
      - Blessed Pope Pius IX
Outside of the Mass, the Rosary is the most important prayer of the Church. More than just a collection of prayers written and adjusted by Catholics throughout history, all of the prayers and mysteries are deeply rooted in Sacred Scripture and Tradition.

      • St. Michael Chaplet
      • Sacred Heart Chaplet
      • Precious Blood Chaplet

      Devotions:
Devotions are practices of honor and prayer, given for various intentions in the Church, that provide a space to meditate on the beauty and mystery of Christ and His Church. Devotions are extremely pious practices that orient us towards God, and help prepare our souls to attain heaven. Below are some common devotions.

      • Five First Saturdays
      • Brown Scapular
      • Miraculous Medal

      Novenas:
A novena is a prayer for a specific purpose or devotion to be prayed over the course of 9 days. Some novenas are longer, and are usually prayed in some multiple of 3 or 9 days. While novenas are usually prayed so that the first day after the novena is completed is the feast day of the saint whose intercession was sought, they can be prayed at any time. Click here to view a year's calendar of novenas and explore all novenas. Below are some novenas to saints popular with students in Catholic Hoos.
      • St. Gemma Galgani

These practices help us to grow closer to God by seeing Him in our lives, reflecting on our thoughts, words, and actions throughout the day, and by growing in virtue and rooting out sin.

    Sacraments
    • Sacraments

"The sacraments are efficacious signs of grace, instituted by Christ and entrusted to the Church, by which divine life is dispensed to us. The visible rites by which the sacraments are celebrated signify and make present the graces proper to each sacrament. They bear fruit in those who receive them with the required dispositions."
      - Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1131

      The Eucharist (Mass):

“If angels could be jealous of men, they would be so for one reason: Holy Communion.”
      - St. Maximillian Kolbe

Mass is offered multiple times a day at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, located right next off of Grounds past O-Hill Dining Hall at 401 Alderman Road. Spiritual Communion:
"A spiritual communion acts on the soul as blowing does on a cinder - covered fire which was about to go out. Whenever you feel your love of God growing cold, quickly make a spiritual communion."
      - St. John Vianney

When you can't physically receive Our Lord in the Eucharist, either at Mass by not being in a state of grace, or having not fasted for at least 1 hour, or when you are anywhere else, pray a spiritual communion to unite yourself to Christ.

      Confession:

"And when he had said this, he shewed them his hands and his side. The disciples therefore were glad, when they saw the Lord. He said therefore to them again: Peace be to you. As the Father hath sent me, I also send you. When he had said this, he breathed on them; and he said to them: Receive ye the Holy Ghost. Whose sins you shall forgive, they are forgiven them; and whose sins you shall retain, they are retained."
      -John 20:20-23

The Sacrament of Penance (Confession) is God's gift to us so that any sin committed after Baptism can be forgiven.  In confession we have the opportunity to repent and recover the grace of friendship with God. It is a holy moment in which we place ourselves in his presence and honestly acknowledge our sins, especially mortal sins.  With absolution, we are reconciled to God and the Church. The Sacrament helps us stay close to the truth that we cannot live without God. "In him we live and move and have our being" (Acts 17:28). Confession times are available multiple times throughout the week and by request. Click here to view Confession times offered at St. Thomas Aquinas Church. Click here to schedule a meeting with Catholic Hoos Chaplain Fr. Joseph-Anthony Kress.
